Artist Statement:

I created this series of drawings and paintings to celebrate the extremely talented young dancers at Dancewave, a Brooklyn non-profit that connects youth dancers with top New York City choreographers. The art of dance is transitory, a figment that is gone the moment you see it. The Dancewave dancers are also in a state of becoming, becoming adults, learning how to control their movements, and coming into their own in their craft. To capture these youthful dancers in motion, I worked in a free-flowing gestural style to contrast their effervescent talent with the rigorous effort that goes into creating a work like this.

About the Artist:

Michael James Freedman worked for more than a decade in fine art after college, primarily working with oil on canvas; he was represented by Corbino Galleries in Sarasota, FL. After a 25-year hiatus to run a successful technology company, Freedman returned to his art practice in March 2020, as the pandemic began. His objective now is to make his artwork accessible and affordable so as to reach a wide audience. In the past year, he has sold over 200 works on paper through his website (michaeljamesfreedman.com). His recent shows include Rebirth: Brooklyn and Laughing on the Outside, group exhibitions produced by Why Not Art. Dancewave : Reflections is his first solo show in NYC.

All proceeds from sales of these pieces go to Dancewave, to support scholarships and help them further their mission.
